This journey will take you beyond the tourist traps, allowing you to gain a true flavor of this magnificent country and the people that live there.

When you disembark from your flight, an airport representative will be waiting for you just inside the terminal door to assist you with your visa and arrival process. Hand the representative your passports and completed documentation and make your way to the luggage carousel while your visa is processed.

The representative will return your passports complete with Cambodian visas and once you have your luggage, make your way outside of the airport to meet your guide. You will be driven to the main part of town for a quick orientation tour. You will be given a quick introduction to the city, and the guide will point out the main roads, markets, some recommended restaurants and Wat Bo, before dropping you off at your hotel to check in.

Wake up early and head to Angkor Wat for sunrise and a morning tour of the temple before the crowds arrive. Your guide will take you to an active Wat, where you should change to clothes you can get wet in as here you will experience the ceremony “Srouch Tec”, which roughly translates into “pour water”. A monk will chant in ancient Pali as he splashes water over you, washing away your sins and bad luck so you can start fresh and by being a good person can increase your good luck.

In the afternoon head to Angkor Thom, the famous walled city, and see the many temples within its borders, including the fascinating Bayon temple with its many magnificent faces smiling out.

There are several beautiful spots from which to watch the sunset. Discuss with your guide where you would like to be and then relax and enjoy a memorable end to your day at the temples.

With your reserved VIP seats, there is no need to wait in line your seat is reserved for you! Today you will learn how to make traditional Cambodian cuisine in the setting of a rural village. You will be met at your hotel and transferred by tuk-tuk to the beautiful Treak village, where your ‘’kitchen’’ for the day will be an outdoor bamboo pavilion, surrounded by banana trees, bamboo and a fish pond – a very special location. The class will include a visit to a local family to learn about cooking in a traditional Khmer household, local food customs and superstitions. After your class you can enjoy your delicious creations as you sit in the peaceful pavilion perched over the fish pond.

Classes last for approximately 3 hours; after which you will be transferred back to your hotel.

This afternoon your tour includes something extra special – you will be accompanied by photographer and long-term Siem Reap resident, who knows the Angkor temples inside out, will record your tour with a mixture of ‘fly-on-the-wall’ and directed posed images – just let him know which type of photos you prefer and he will tailor the pictures to your taste. While his approach will be very much to keep his distance and let you enjoy your tour uninterrupted, he is a valuable source of information regarding the best viewpoints at the temples and can help you with your own images.

Your portfolio of high quality, professionally retouched images will be emailed directly to you within 1 week.

Take a tour of the Royal Palace today which, to this day, is still the royal residence. See the amazing royal collection and the beautiful architecture before heading to the National Museum. You will be met and taken around by a trained museum guide who will show you some wonderful pre-Angkorean pieces as well as a number of special pieces from the temples. You will also visit the White Building which was built in 1963 and the Post Office which is one of the oldest buildings of the French colonial era.

Next, take a tour of Wat Phnom, a small hill crowned by an active wat which marks the legendary founding place of Phnom Penh.

After looking around, head to the Central Market, reported to be the biggest domed market in the world, and to the famous Russian Market where everything from souvenirs to car parts is on sale. Enjoy a shopping spree or just browse along with the locals who are out doing their shopping.

This morning, head to the Tuol Sleng Prison Museum where your guide will explain the history of the Khmer Rouge and walk you through the different museum displays. After watching the introductory movie, continue on to the Choeung Ek Memorial, the site of one of the country’s many killing fields. At the entrance you will find a memorial stupa and shallow pits reminding visitors of the thousands killed under the Pol Pot Regime.

There is an excellent audio headset on site which includes firsthand survivor stories, accounts from guards, traditional music, as well as a guided tour of the site. We recommend using this thoughtful and well-produced audio tour as most visitors to the Choeung Ek Memorial use the personalized headset tours, leaving the somber grounds quiet allowing for introspection.

Your JW guide will be on hand if you would prefer to explore the site with them or have any additional questions after you have completed your audio tour. You will be transferred back to your hotel.
