Cambodia Family Tour

Cambodia Family Tour

You can head out and explore all the different countries and culture Southeast Asia has to offer, or you can spend your time getting to really know all Cambodia has to offer. Cambodia is so much more than just temples. As we often say, “you’ll love the temples, but you’ll fall in love with Cambodia.” If you and your family are ready to fall in love with Cambodia, take this tour throughout the highlights of this incredible country.

When you disembark from your flight, an airport representative will be waiting for you just inside the terminal door to assist you with your visa and arrival process. Hand the representative your passports and completed documentation and make your way to the luggage carousel while your visa is processed. The representative will return your passports complete with Cambodian visas and once you have your luggage, make your way outside of the airport to meet your guide.

After breakfast, head to Angkor Wat in an air-conditioned car with your guide. Explore this majestic temple throughout the morning while it is still cool and has fewer tourists.
Pay a visit to Apopo’s Hero Rats visitor center.

These incredible little creatures are the most effective method to-date for clearing landmines, working towards the ultimate goal of Cambodia being mine-free by 2025. Enjoy a live demonstration of the landmine clearing process before meeting the rats and their handlers in their housing area.

Following your experience, you can engage in an open Q&A session with a veteran de-miner and the center staff. Return to your hotel for an early lunch or have your guide drop you off in town where they can help you find a good place to eat. Remember to take a look at our Cheat Sheet which lists a number of our favorite restaurant recommendations!

In the afternoon head to Angkor Thom, the famous walled city, and see the many temples within its borders, including the fascinating Bayon temple with its many magnificent faces smiling out. Your tour includes something extra special – you will be accompanied by photographer and long-term Siem Reap resident, Chris Cusick. Chris, who knows the Angkor temples inside out, will record your tour with a mixture of ‘fly-on-the-wall’ and directed posed images – just let him know which type of photos you prefer and he will tailor the pictures to your taste.

While his approach will be very much to keep his distance and let you enjoy your tour uninterrupted, he is a valuable source of information regarding the best viewpoints at the temples and can help you with your own images. Your portfolio of high-quality, professionally retouched images will be emailed directly to you within 1 week.

There are several beautiful spots from which to watch the sunset.

Discuss with your guide where you would like to be and then relax and enjoy a memorable end to your day at the temples.

You will be met by your guide to head southwest out of Siem Reap to Mey Chrey Floating Village. Enjoy the scenery as you drive through the villages and green rice fields before arriving at the dock to board your boat to the village. As you enter the village you will begin to see what life on the water is like.

You will pass by floating shops, houses, and the local floating primary school before arriving at your kayaking base. Meet the local family and jump in your kayaks to continue your exploration of the village at a slower and quieter pace. Paddle behind the village houses and back towards the school, to find our secret cut-through taking you into a magical quiet part of the river system. Paddle the open expanse of the river admiring the greenery along the banks and the local native birdlife as you cruise around to a different part of the floating village where you will paddle the main thoroughfare, before boarding your boat back to the dock and enjoying the 45-minute air-conditioned drive back to your hotel.

This evening you will be treated to a unique performance by the Cambodian Circus, also known as the hugely talented Phare Ponleu Selpak from your VIP seats. Literally translated as ‘’the brightness of the arts’’, this Artistic and Social Center has been running as a non-profit association since 1994 and was founded by a group of young ex-refugees from Battambang Province. With your reserved VIP seats, there is no need to wait in line your seat is reserved for you! Sitting in the center of the big top tent, you will witness some remarkable acrobatics and visual arts while supporting one of Cambodia’s most inspiring projects.

This morning, head to the Tuol Sleng Prison Museum where your guide will explain the history of the Khmer Rouge and walk you through the different museum displays. After watching the introductory movie, continue on to the Choeung Ek Memorial, the site of one of the country’s many killing fields. At the entrance, you will find a memorial stupa and shallow pits reminding visitors of the thousands killed under the Pol Pot Regime. There is an excellent audio headset on site which includes firsthand survivor stories, accounts from guards, traditional music, as well as a guided tour of the site.

We recommend using this thoughtful and well-produced audio tour as most visitors to the Choeung Ek Memorial use the personalized headset tours, leaving the somber grounds quiet allowing for introspection. Your guide will be on hand if you would prefer to explore the site with them or have any additional questions after you have completed your audio tour. You will be transferred back to your hotel.

You will learn why the bears are threatened in Cambodia while touring the world-class facilities including the education program, research program, and what the nonprofit Free the Bears is doing to build a brighter future for bears in the wild. You will help the Bear Care Team to prepare food and special treats to keep the bears happy and healthy in their forest enclosures. Best of all, by taking part in this unique experience you’ll be contributing directly towards helping care for bears rescued from the illegal wildlife trade.
