Cambodia's capital. The city where Royal history sits beside the Mekong
Phnom Penh carries two moods at once. Golden roofs, temple walls and wide boulevards hold the memory of a royal capital. A few streets away, coffee shops, galleries, market stalls and night food kitchens run at their own pace. The Mekong and the Tonle Sap meet just beyond the palace walls. Two or three days is the usual plan here, and most travelers leave wishing they had kept one more.
Capital of Contrasts
Phnom Penh - A Royal City Embracing Its Future
Most Cambodia trips start or end in Siem Reap, and Phnom Penh is the other half of the story. The temples are what the Khmer empire left behind. The capital is what the country lived through after that, and what it is making now. You can stand in a throne hall in the morning and eat grilled pork with rice on a plastic stool at night. Both halves of the day belong to the same country.
The city is also easy to travel in. Distances inside the center are short, tuk tuks are everywhere, costs are low, and English is widely spoken in hotels, restaurants and shops.

How many days to give Phnom Penh And When to visit
Two nights covers the Royal Palace, the National Museum and one market, with an evening on the river. Three nights makes room for Tuol Sleng, Choeung Ek and a private night food walk, and it keeps the days from stacking up. Add a fourth night for a slower pace or a half day out of town.
The dry months from November to April are the easiest, with bright days and lower humidity. November brings Bon Om Touk, the water festival, when crews race long boats on the Tonle Sap and the riverbanks fill with crowds. May to October is the wet season, and the rain usually arrives as a short afternoon shower rather than a washed out day. April is the hottest month and Khmer New Year, when many city businesses close as people travel to their home provinces.
